Whatever you believe in, be it science or religion, we can at least assume that life on earth began 5000 years ago at creation, or 3. 7 billion years ago with microbes, and intelligent life around 150000 years ago. Human life as we know it may have even started later than this estimate.
Our planet is estimated to be 4.5 billion years old and as much as we currently know, we're a spaceship orbiting a star within a network of other similar spaceships, albeit with no discernable life forms on them. We have solid land, and large water bodies. Somehow, we have the perfect soup for life to be created in. Accident or design, we may never know.
Amongst all the phases of human life, boredom is the one I find most baffling. We go through so much in life, and this is one of the things that we experience. Boredom, however, makes no sense especially if you consider evolution and all the other factors. We don't even know why we exist, or what's in the oceans, or what's in space or what consciousness is, or what happens at death YET boredom often creeps up from time to time.
Why?
There's so much to do, so many experiences to go through, so many books to read, and yet we tend to find ourselves on the brink of boredom frequently.
We all have limited time to explore our world, often aware that our existence may cease at any moment. Our very existence is a miracle or accident of nature, a temporary lull between two eternities of darkness, with no prior knowledge of what we were, where we were and where we will go at death. This much is obvious to most of us, we get sucked into the eternally dark alley of a state of (paralytic/unproductive) boredom.
I once read an article that suggested that "Boredom is “a signal from your brain that you’re not making good use of a part of the brain,” like the tingling of a foot you’ve sat on too long.
Boredom reminds us that we need to exercise our minds, but there are antidotes to boredom besides curiosity—e.g. food or sex".
I am in agreement with the author here and suppose the way you is to get our brains to do some work.
In conclusion, one of my favourite philosophers in the modern era, Arthur Schopenhauer was quoted to have said this:
"Schopenhauer believed that life’s chief task is “subsisting at all,” followed directly by “warding off boredom, which, like a bird of prey, hovers over us, ready to fall whenever it sees a life secure from need.” To be content is to be bored, & curiosity is our ticket out"
(I suppose it is from the same article I read previously). Anyway, this is your cue to stop being bored and do something exciting. Your life is limited, your time is limited. One day you will die and soon enough, your memories will fade away as the last person that knows you dies. Your grave will be forgotten soon enough. Enrich your life with great experiences, and stop being bored 🙂
